Grant felt well enough to join them for dinner. Reggie kept the meal light—omelets with feta cheese and sautéed mushrooms, dusted with a little rosemary. Jesse enjoyed the food, but his mind kept returning to Milan. He thought about the shop that might never be, because of the absence of one man. He wondered what Milan liked, other than chocolate. He imagined what Milan might look like naked, his long red hair splayed out across his pillow, perhaps with chocolate smeared across his chest. He’d never had food fantasies before, but he couldn’t get the image out of his head.

Jesse roamed restlessly about the house. Tired of thinking too much about things that could never be, he told Reggie he was going for a walk.

He didn’t really know where he wanted to go. Somehow his feet read his mind. What reason did he have to think Milan was even there this late, especially with everything being all done for tomorrow? No reason whatsoever. And yet he stopped in the coffee shop and bought him a latte, hoping it was the right kind.

The heat of the day had eased somewhat with the advent of night—a slight stickiness remained. Jesse welcomed the occasional cool breeze that swept across the back of his neck, bringing a touch of relief. As he neared the candy shop, he saw no lights, and his heart sank. He should’ve known the chocolatier had gone home. It hadn’t occurred to him to ask Milan where he lived, and he was afraid if he asked Reggie it would draw unanswerable questions from his friend. Might as well return, though, nothing to be done here.

He started to remove the plastic lid of the drink, intending to pour it out, when his attention was attracted by a colorful piece of paper caught up in the evening breeze. It swirled up into the air, then soared over his head in a lopsided flight before coming to rest upon the empty driveway several yards from where he stood. He idly followed its path, when he realized a light burned in the back of the house. Milan was there, he was just in the kitchen.

Jesse didn’t feel right going through the front door as he and Reggie had done this morning, so he walked along the side of the house, into the narrow back yard. There was an outbuilding of some sort, and what seemed like it might have been a dog run at one time. He climbed the stairs to a screened-in porch and knocked on the wooden door, it rattled at his touch, and his knock echoed loudly in the stillness. If Milan didn’t respond, then he would know he shouldn’t be here, and he’d just slip away again, no harm done.

Just when he was about to lose his nerve and go, the door opened, and he found himself looking up into the soft brown eyes of the chocolatier. Gone was the chocolate-smeared apron, in its place a pale rose dress shirt with short sleeves and a v-neckline.
